When you use authentication to acces you webserver, that means that you don''t want anybody to access your private webcam and/or files.
Security has become an important issue as the Internet is as dangerous as marvellous it can be.
Hence you can now securize the access to you WapcamServer web server.
You have the possibility to choose between Basic and Digest Authentication.
- Basic Authentication: This method is (unfortunately) widely used on internet as it is very simple to set up, but it should be qualified of a "weak" protection. Indeed, when you use such a method, the password is sent across the network and if someone sniffes over your network, he will be able to read your password in clear text.
- Digest authentication: This method is pretty different from the previous one. In this case, the client and the server make an agreement to make a computation based on the password. The result of that computation is sent by the client to the server. The server compares that value with its own computation, and if they equal, access it then granted. The great advantage of that method, is that your password is NEVER sent accross the network. Someone sniffing the network wouldn'' be able to access your private data.
Of course digest authentication offers a much greater security than the basic one. However, you have to take care that you browser supports that method. It should be now with recent browser but older system may lack that |
